Qualification -
Unit of Competency MSFFP2003 - Prepare surfaces
Description
Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit specifies the competency required to prepare a range of surfaces for the application of surface coatings. It is designed for use in a pre-employment skills introduction program and is suitable for use in institutional-based vocational programs. Skills development will take place under direct supervision. This unit is not to be used in a traineeship or apprenticeship training program or associated qualifications. It is only to be used in pre-employment programs and carries no credit towards apprenticeship/trade and other qualification types in manufacturing and furnishings. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Assessors must:

satisfy the assessor competency requirements that are in place at the time of the assessment as set by the VET regulator

have vocational competency in preparing surfaces at least to the level being assessed with relevant industry knowledge and experience

Assessment must occur in a sufficiently rigorous simulated environment that reflects realistic workplace situations.

Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required to undertake this unit.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

minimising wastage of resources, including materials, time and money

communicating and working effectively and safely with others.

Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

safe work practices and procedures and use of PPE

types, properties and characteristics of coatings

surface preparation materials and techniques

capabilities, limitations and safety requirements of tools and equipment

hazardous substances, materials and precautions to be observed in preparing surfaces, including the review of the MSDS for each material to be used

sequences in relation to the application and removal of surface coatings

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

Elements describe the essential outcomes.
